Spotlight on SAF

Given SAF is the most promising lever that currently exists for the aviation industry to decarbonize, that sector has taken a leadership role in the development and deployment of SAF. But one industry cannot do it alone and the benefits of scaling a market for SAF go far beyond the environment benefits, including the creation of good-paying American jobs. Achieving commercial viability requires important policies and partnerships for the SAF market to come to fruition.

While we continue to make progress, there needs to be supportive government policies, ongoing commitment from an array of stakeholders and expanded public-private partnerships to push the industry over the cusp. American farmers and producers are an important piece of the puzzle – and only stand to benefit from scaling the nascent SAF market now and in the future.

ECONOMIC BENEFITS

Statement of Principles

  • The United States must commit to supporting clean aviation fuels (CAFs) to both ensure domestic energy security and promote growth for America’s farmers and heartland economy, and our environment.
  • CAFs represent the future of the aviation industry and encompass the universe of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), which are biofuels or synthetic fuels derived from renewable biomass feedstocks, waste resources, and renewable energy resources as well as captured carbon and hydrogen. They are competitive, high performing and benefit the environment and economic growth.
  • Domestic policymakers, elected officials and economic leaders must prioritize the scaling of CAFs beyond current production and distribution to support national security, the American economy, and our environment.
  • Domestic policies to advance CAFs should be technology and feedstock neutral, not stifle innovation or disrupt food supply, and ensure all carbon mitigation measures, starting on the farm through end-use delivery, are appropriately quantified and valued.

Americans for Clean Aviation Fuels Policy Priorities

The Americans for Clean Aviation Fuels Coalition advocates for the following policies:

  • We call on Congress to extend existing federal incentives to scale SAF, including  a broad extension of the Clean Fuel Production Tax Credit (IRC Section 45Z) to provide long term investment certainty for clean fuel producers and the full value chain.

  • We support enhancing and strengthening the federal FAST SAF grant program and other mechanisms that complement existing incentives and derisk investment.

  • We support adoption of new state-level SAF incentives and policies that are stackable with and will complement existing federal incentives.

  • We support the removal of existing regulatory barriers to scaling SAF production and clearing hurdles for new SAF feedstocks.

  • We support aligned incentives and flexibility for America’s farmers to invest in regionally appropriate climate smart agricultural (CSA) practices that are scientifically proven to reduce lifecycle emissions.

Founders’ CAFs Initiatives

ACAF’s founding members are deeply involved and rooted in efforts across the supply chain to build partnerships and advocate for polices to build a market for clean aviation fuels while creating jobs and securing America’s energy future. Read about their efforts here.
