Grapevine, Texas — Cherie Wilson, Vice President of Government Affairs - Sustainability at Delta Air Lines, an Americans for Clean Aviation Fuels (ACAF) founding member, recently spoke at the Sustainable Aviation Energy Conference hosted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Wilson participated in a panel entitled “The Importance of Federal Industry Collaboration to Achieving Aviation Ecosystem Goals.” Her remarks focused on building a policy framework to help grow America’s clean aviation fuels (CAFs) market – highlighting the economic benefits to heartland farmers as well as national efforts to reduce carbon emissions through innovation across the value chain.
Commenting on how policymakers can help catalyze the tremendous economic and environmental benefits of CAFs, Wilson said: “Achieving national decarbonization goals means putting in place the right policy framework today. Policies that support the expansion of America’s clean aviation fuels market will help create jobs in rural communities, advance sustainable farming practices, and boost American energy independence. This panel discussion was representative of the type of forward looking industry collaboration that is necessary to successfully build the American CAFs market, advancing the most promising, in-production and scalable lever to accelerate progress toward a net zero future.”
CAFs provide an environmentally sound alternative to using conventional jet fuel by significantly reducing lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and encompass the universe of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) – biofuels or synthetic fuels derived from renewable biomass feedstocks, waste resources, and renewable energy resources, as well as captured carbon and hydrogen.
Wilson was joined on the panel by Robert Horton, Vice President of Environmental Affairs and Sustainability at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport; Joanne Morello, Program Manager for Sustainable Aviation Fuel at General Electric Aerospace Research Center; and Dave Ulane, Director of the Division of Aeronautics at the Colorado Department of Transportation.
